Question by C.S.: Why is it so bad that Obama didn’t answer the spiritual and metaphysical questions?
“To answer that question with specificity, uh, you know, is is above my pay grade”

Finally, a President that doesn’t pretend (PRETEND) to know the spiritual answers to all of life’s riddles. I thought this was a good statement, but everyone else is making fun of it.

The problem for you pro-lifers is if you think that the President has the ‘pay-grade’ to decide when life begins, why didn’t the Justices in Roe v. Wade have the level of knowledge to decide that question.

Making fun of Obama is actually hurting the pro-life cause here….I think.

Eitherway, why is this so bad that Obama said this?

What is bad about it is that he should have just said, “I don’t want to answer that question.” What he did was to attempt to avoid the question, but avoid saying that is what he was doing.

I wish he would simply say what he really means.

I don’t want the president to comment on theological issues unless he is a theologian. Obama nor McCain clearly aren’t. It would be just as dumb to ask them what they think about particle physics.

It wouldnt be a big deal, EXCEPT obama’s moral standings are being seriously questioned. He was a member of a questionable church, he does have a certain stance on abortion. He has a lot going against him. It’s not wrong for people to try to find answers before they vote. I know I wouldnt vote for someone that I viewed as unethical.

  • tickled blue says:

The phrase he used simply means that God decides when life begins, not humans. I think it was an accurate statement, and a humble one.

because he gets paid to have his openions heard. duh. his statement “above my pay grade” what does that say to the american people? what kind of answer is that? it isnt an answer its avoidance. perhaps an answer of “i believe in a womans choice, but i think god is the only one who can answer that question” would have settled a lot better.

  • slim says:

Because we really don’t want someone that’s honest, and it’s very sad

  • Theo says:

he needs to know that sort of stuff.he should just read his bible

  • 60 min man says:

i find it hard to believe that he has no opinion, prolife or prochoice. that seems pretty basic to me, but i am only human.

  • PETEY YEAH!!! says:

He’s running for President, not Pope. I think the fact he doesn’t spew out canned party responses is rightly done. McCain, on the other hand, looked like he was reciting lines from a play.

  • dannyjs25 says:

They asked him what he thought and he wouldn’t say. I also think he was acting kind of like he was ‘better than that question’ too.

  • Theo N says:

It is bad because he rode the fence on the questions and would not make any firm statements about his own personal beliefs. While I don’t think it would matter whether he was a strict christian or a atheist, what does matter is whether he is honest about his beliefs and will stand up for them. Riding the fence for fear of offending a group is much worse than stating an unpopular opinion and sticking by it. Obama’s statements were “pandering” to the christian conservatives while trying not to offend the liberal base.
