Question by Starman: Why do so many atheists come to the Religion and Spirituality section in Yahoo Answers?
Questions I ask in the Religion and Spirituality section directed to atheists often get 25 or more responses. Then I got to wondering why atheists are interested in answering questions that are on the topic of religion and spirituality.

Best answer:

Answer by polants
Because it’s fun… I have an interest in religion. I want to explore how they managed to manipulate so many people. Hitler found out how to do it. Google it if you dont believe me

Why do so many christians avoid using the search function before asking such obvious questions? This may just be the 1,000,000th time this question has appeared.

I was religious as a child, and have always been interested in religions, mythology and science.

I realised in mid-teenage that faith was based upon nothing but itself, that science explained nature satisfactorily without needing supernatural beings, and that religious beliefs were no different to those of ancient beliefs in gods and goddesses.

When I first had doubts about my faith I thought that maybe this was a test of my faith, which was an idea planted in my mind by those teaching us about our faith. So I made the effort to accept it even more so. But the doubts came again, and I wondered what would happen if we took faith out of the equation; the world and nature still made sense, so I saw no reason to get back into it. And my understanding is that there’s no theoretical or mathematical need for a god or gods, and there’s no valid evidence of it or them; so there’s no reason to believe. At the time this was difficult intellectually and emotionally (I was a teenager, after all).

That was over 40 years ago, and my escape from faith has freed me to embrace what science has to offer, which I consider far more plausible than belief in the supernatural, and is the nearest we can get to the truth about how nature and the universe work. I’ve felt a sense of freedom ever since, and am happy and at peace with this.

I still have an interest in religions, mythology, folklore and related matters, and am fascinated that people still believe in things that to me are clearly just not true.

Because it doesn’t take a believer to know what’s true and what isn’t.

  • Jeff S says:

I ask myself the same question, it seems a bit insane to rant and rave about a topic that you claim to have no belief in.

  • J E R R Y says:

Your learning that’s why i always put atheists on mine

  • A Modest Proposal says:

We have input. Personally I’m here to dispel myths about science and superstition and millennia-old stories, scrutinize religion, and help spread critical thinking.

For the same reason believers go to other sections of Y!A: They can, they want, and you can’t stop them.

  • Cassi says:

A lot of Atheists (not all, but some) feel threatened by faith. They wish to put down and hinder others faith. The more they can say it isn’t real, the better they feel.

  • daken says:

Because society is affected by the religions of the people and we want to know more about it. Also we want to understand what our family and friends believe. We want to answer the questions that you direct towards us. There are many more reasons, for the comprehensive list, search for this question, and see how many times we have answered it.

  • Atheist Friend says:

I am here because I enjoy discussing and debating religion and spirituality, I enjoy learning about religion and spirituality, and I enjoy replying to the questions people ask of atheists.

  • Atheist ninja says:

because we understand religion better then you

  • Alex38 says:

    Atheists are manipulated by Satan,

He works behind the scenes and plays man like a string puppet you have to step back and look at the bigger picture to understand what he is trying to do.

The good news is nothing can separate God from his Children very, very soon God and Jesus will be with us there will be no more tears in this world and the devil will be gone forever!

He’s on his way out and he knows it! As in hit the road jack!

  • SurfUp says:

You see Atheists and I see Avatars, why is that? Obviously you don’t realize how many different Avatars one mentally-sick resident forum troll can use…

  • WellTraveledProg says:

Because lack of belief in religion or spirituality is an opinion on religion and spirituality, just as much as belief in them is.

I come here because those that *do* believe in religions and spirituality affect me and the world I live in, almost always in harmful ways. I would like them to stop affecting me and my world in harmful ways. Pretty simple, huh?

    Peace.

  • the Christian says:

There looking for answers…but the answer always seem’s to elude them…and they can’t figure it out..it’s becuse they have no faith, the key to knowing God.

    God loves you…..God bless

  • Linda G says:

We try to get our point across because religions affect our lives. Religious people decided they had the right to deny civil rights to same sex couples and continue to try and force other legislation based on their church doctrine.
The U.S. used to be a world leader in science and now we are falling behind. Fundamentalists are fine with that sad fact and even want children to be taught that dinosaurs co-existed with people.
Finally, because we have just as much right as anyone else to voice our opinions.
But, thank you for asking a question in a rational manner and avoiding the ranting and raving we see so much of.

  • Sage says:

Why the ignorance of what an atheist is?!!

ATHEIST – someone who does not believe in a God – any God – not just the Christian one. But that does not mean they do not hold strong moral or religious beliefs! They can follow any religion that does not have a god and there are a lot of those!!

Like BUDDHISM – Religious teaching from Buddha and his followers that by destroying greed, hatred and delusion (the cause of all suffering) man can attain perfect enlightenment!!

Where do you think christianity got it’s ideas of a soul and afterlife from for goodness sake?

They stole it from the pagan tribes and peoples which existed hundreds and thousands of years before christianity!!

From the stone age through vikings, Egyptians, Maoris, Aborigines, American Indians and especially the chinese, they all had elaborate funerals and grave goods to speed the soul into the next life with comfort!!

One day christians will realize what damage their ignorance about non christians is doing to their religion!!

But will it be too late?!!

    Why are atheists on here

“because its not a religious chat room
but a question answers site about religion and spirituality

and atheists actually can talk, discuss, debate, give and receive knowledge on god and religion and spirituality
    thats why
and same as you, they like to share knowledge with others and hear knowledge from others
and even help some people by answering their qs and giving advice

it says on the site “Yahoo answers
Ask answer discover”……….’ not religious chat for religious people’”

people answering questions are not preaching
it is a q/a site after all
this place is about knowledge and information, not beliefs and agreement

you dont have to agree with everyone to have an interest in a subject
you dont have to believe every word about it to have an interest in it

not everyone who is interested in music is a musician
not everyone who is interested in cooking is a chef
not everyone who is interested in archaeology is an archaeologist
    you see what i mean….
not everyone who is interested in religion is religious…
not everyone who is interested in spirituality is spiritual”

i chose to come to r&s, as that seems to be your main point, because i love to ask and answer qs on religion and spirituality, i love talking, debating on ALL subjects of interest and especially ones that get people really thinking and talking
    as
i love sociology and psychology and this place is great for that

and atheists can be spiritual, i believe many other things just not god”

  • aware and happy says:

it’s fun. besides, if you’re directing questions at atheists, you must expect us to be here. so i guess you could say we do it for you. can’t you find it in your heart to show just a little bit of appreciation?
