Liars came into their own with They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, a concept album about the power of paranoia and fear. Drawing it’s album title, as well as the title of it’s songs, from the defeated and dead laid waste at the hands of paranoid witch hunts, the Liars created an confrontational album that’s more a force of nature than a collection of songs and music.

Hold Hands and It Will Happen Anyway provides a fragile melody, and juxtaposes that with primitive, pagan drumming and nihilistic guitars. Punk is not dead.

There’s Always Room on the Broom is definitely another highlight from the album – I was torn between the two tracks on which one to include.

I also love We Fenced Other Houses with the Bones of Our Own.

liars are awesome, drum’s not dead is my favorite, they were wrong is second. this album also has the song that originally got me into them which is ‘there’s always room on the broom’. i have never heard such melodic distortion before. i think liars are truly a stepping stone between pop music and noise. i would recommend them to anyone who thought they might be interested in the noise genre as a starting point. they clearly like to focus on percussion (a lot of traditional african stuff) but they also like to experiment with droning, minimalism and electronics. they have changed quite a bit since their debut, i think they could end up being one of the more influential bands from this era
