Question by Your Karmic Return: Why is it considered best to study astrology and numerology before attempting to learn tarot?
I’ve seen a reader give this advice to a new reader, and I’m wondering what advantages this order of events would have over just attempting to learn tarot first.

I don’t know a lot about numerology, and I’m wondering also how numerology ties into tarot.
I’m having a little problem connecting these cards with these placements:

the chariot: cancer
the page of swords: the fool
the 3 of cups: mercury in Cancer
7 of Swords: the lord of unstable effort: moon in aquarius

i know only a little bit about numerology. and it helps. the meanings of the cards are tied to numerology and astrology. every card has a astrological correspondence. for example:

the chariot: cancer
the hanged man: neptune
the page of swords: the fool
the 3 of cups: mercury in Cancer
7 of Swords: the lord of unstable effort: moon in aquarius

It was very easy for me to learn the meanings of the cards by learning their astrology correspondence.

lets take for example the 7 of swords. Lord of Unstable effort. It is indeed related to the moon (unstable) and to aquarius (a man running away trying to escape — this is related to the aquarius mentality ‘thinking outside of a box’ Uranus ellusive energy).

Also there is a Caballistic correspondence to each tarot card if you wanna go deeper. i have not got there myself.

im not sure about numerology and tarot. as far as astrology and tarot goes, all i know is that the suits are representative of different elements.

wands represent fire; the spark of creative energy. they stand for self expression through enterprise, so they frequently refer to work and business. fire is an active male energy.

cups represent water; the emotions, most particularly love and relationships. water is a female, passive and nurturing element.

swords represent the air element; intellect, the thinking aspect of our self. many people fear the cards from this suit, but on the positive side they allow us to cut through confusion to see matters as they really are and then deal with the situation realistically and with great clarity.

pentacles represent the earth element; our physical being and the needs of our daily life, the material aspects that we work for and value-such as money, property, and material possessions. earth is a stabilizing influence.

those are the descriptions of all the suits from my “easy tarot handbook”

Also, astrology is the oldest divinatory system in the world, so the tarot can learn from it.
So why use astrology? One very good reason is the rapport that can be built between you and the querent. If the Death card is prominent, you can talk about ‘change, not necessarily death…’, but with astrology you can mention Scorpio, and it is very likely that the querent will know a Scorpio, and quite probably the apprehension engendered by the Death card will diminish. While Tarot cards are a good indicator of what can happen, using Astrology will enable you to make predictions – when something will happen. It is even possible to time-travel and say when an event happened in the recent past too. Knowing the terminology of astrology also helps when speaking to astrologers, and you never know, you could learn new techniques you can apply in your readings. Astrology helps you to understand the court cards, to put them in a context, and even know the sun signs they represent. In short, Astrology adds sophistication and depth to your readings.

I learned about of it at the same time. But as you know, I am both smarter and more intuitive than most people. What really helped me was the fact that I had been studying psychology, philosophy, mythology, symbology, and other things prior to astrology and tarot.

My primary concern was learning more about myself. I didn’t get too deeply into numerology. I know the basic number meanings but not so much about personal year numbers. Oddly my number for my name and my birthday are both 7 as are some of my other numbers. The numbers in the minor arcana correspond to very basic numerology. I believe this book goes into that a bit: http://www.amazon.com/Tarot-Plain-Simple-Anthony-Louis/dp/1567184006/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267998247&sr=1-1

Different people learn in different ways. I don’t think it can be assumed that everyone should study astrology and numerology before tarot. But I do think some understanding of the importance of symbology would be helpful.

I don’t think it’s necessary to learn either before you learn tarot. Learning it as you go along is helpful for a deeper reading but it can interfere with developing your psychic skills with reading.

Each tarot card is designated a number which has numerological significance. For example if a reading spread has more than one Ace’s of the suits, it’s an indication that there are new beginnings in several different areas of the querents life.

If you pull a lot of 9’s it’s significant as it shows there are completions and reassessments happening. And so on…

When I teach the tarot i incorporate numerology as I go rather than before we start. Better that way.

Your cards at face value are depicting thwarted effort without success and energy all over the place with no clear direction. Depending on what you question was and what spread you used, what is needed to move forward is getting clear on what actions steps you need to take and bring them out of the water and air and into grounded action – earth. Otherwise every-thing remains up in the air, filled with hope and possibility but no reality of manifestation here on earth.

You do not need to learn either of them in great detail, but they do complement each other. I have learnt about astrology and numerology from Tarot and not the other way around.

You will need an understanding of the four classical elements, air (swords=intellect), fire (wands=passion), water (cups=emotions), and earth (pentacles=physical), as these are the different types of energies of the four suits. You will also need a basic understanding of the numbers from 1 to 10, e.g. 1 is for new beginnings and the pure essence of the element, 2 is for duality, 3 is for a solution, a first stage of completion, 4 is for stability/stagnation, 5 is for instability, 6 is for adjustment, 7 is for withdrawal/restraint/separation, 8 is for reorganisation, 9 is for completion, 10 is for abundance/excess.

P.S. I am assuming you are not reading Tarot purely from the card images which some more intuitive/psychic people do.
