Inspired by a conversation with Theo Warner. En Español: www.youtube.com (Thanks to AmazedAtheist) Is there any value in spirituality? As an atheist you may expect me to say no; but if I’m being honest, I’d have to consider myself a spiritual person. Of course I’m not talking about some ghostly ethereal soul that lives inside my body. There’s no reason to think there’s anything like that. I’m talking about the essence of human. There aren’t many words in our language that capture what that is. at least for me. And so I use the word spirit, in the same way I use the phrase bless you. For rhetoric’s sake. I can only describe it as the action or ability to see beauty. to feel wonder. and to be in awe. Religion and all groups faith of course serve only to prostitute the awe, and the mystery we all feel as humans. they bottle our essence and try putting lid on the wonder we naturally feel. They fail of course. Religion points to the man behind the curtain in an attempt answer the mystery. when in reality, there is no man. the mystery is just that. a mystery. But even though I don’t believe in the supernatural, I try to be as honest as I can to myself, about my spirituality. On my trip out west just a couple months ago I remember a moment standing in a field that looked up at the grand tetons. the tetons in wyoming are these massive glacier capped mountains that just cut into the sky. I remember thinking to myself. Something much greater than me must have caused this. I know it

@TheExastrologer Does he reject the Bible, or the church’s interpretation of it? What Fox does is reinterpret scriptures to agree with other religious traditions and modern consciousness. He is not misleading people. He is encouraging us to fully live the spiritual life here and now. He doesn’t claim we can be Christs any more than Paul does in Galatians 2:20. I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.

  • TheExastrologer says:

I tried to post this on another Matthew Fox Youtube video but it kept saying “error.” So am posting it here. There is nothing in the Bible that says we can all be Christs as Fox claims. Since he’s rejecting most of the Bible, he is making his own New Age ideas the basis for truth. What is his authority for this? He has none at all, yet we are supposed to take his word over God’s word. It’s sad how many he is misleading.

Well, Spirituality=know thyself. However, thou art that!

  • Pitraptor says:

I think you hit it on the head right there, I didn’t define spirituality for myself untill I was 17 at which point I began to see life it’s self as a spiritual thing. Which is to say that I saw everything that happened to me or effected me as in some way enriching or maturing my own growth not only as a person but on several planes. I saw each event as an oportunity to improve. When I see things that way I know I can find the good in some of the worst situations I’ve been in.

  • geniusloch says:

Matthew Fox has Zero knowledge of how the mind and body are integrated, in relation to Yoga or any other discipline. Because of this, he has Zero knowledge of the basis of a spiritual relationship, relative to an individual with an integrated mind / body. From my perspective, which is from a teacher of knowledge, relative to the integration of the mind/body/spirit/ soul and multiple disciples, his knowledge is pointless and meaningless.

The one who leaves for the shore is not the one who arrives
Neither death nor life is the beckoning of the shore
I tell you wake up from your slumber
You’ve been deceived, for you never left
    Cling to some distant shore…where

The journey you must traverse is your choosing
Doesn’t matter just wake up, I tell you
Within ever verdant is the love, bliss and joy which is your own
This is your home of which all aspire
Cling to the shore of no…where

  • skywize says:

@PluralOfEverything Nah, nothing can hurt me! lolz. You explained it better than I could. Your right, I feel like I am part of things, connected. I feel closer to nature because, in some way, everything is family to me. I definitely have relatives that intellectually resemble rocks.

  • codyr5 says:

I don’t mean to judge but what point is there to proclaim I’m an atheist all your saying is I don’t believe in anything it’s obvious we were created by what or who is the question humans have always strived to answer what I believe makes know difference I can’t force you to believe or not to believe what I do do or do not believe in all I can do is present the facts and hope you at least understand not agree with me but humans have a violent nature and take war and argument over it really if we

  • PluralOfEverything says:

@skywize Ah, so it’s more like feeling like you are a part of the same thing that other things are, which makes perfect sense. We are made of material that was fused together in a star, so we are one with the stars. We evolved from the same processes that gave rise to other animal species, so we are one with them. It doesn’t necessarily mean that animals won’t hurt you, so definitely be careful.

  • skywize says:

@PluralOfEverything One with something? I don’t know, it’s hard to explain….especially with my vocabulary. I guess it’s the feeling that you are a part of it. Being one with nature, in my opinion is the knowledge that you are a part of it, a cog in the machine. It’s why I am the way I am with animals. I know I am just an animal myself, so they seem to be less bothered by me. I’ve never been bitten, and I have done some stupid shit like hand feeding wild animals. Of course, I could be lucky.

  • PluralOfEverything says:

@skywize Yes, there are fake atheists. Christians sometimes jump on atheism in general as being just people mad at their parents for making them go to church. Personally, I think that’s a perfectly valid reason to begin rejecting religion.

What does it mean to be one with something?

  • skywize says:

@PluralOfEverything ok, ok, perhaps I worded that wrong, I was tired. By “true atheist” I simply meant people who don’t just go against religion because it will piss off mommy and daddy…I’ve known a few people like that. As for spirituality, I’ve heard the word defined as being “at peace” or “one with something”, in an Atheist’s case, that means one with nature, or reality. In truth, only an Atheist can do that since Theists add a third element that does not exist. That’s just my opinion.

  • PluralOfEverything says:

@skywize The word is pure nonsense, and so is the idea of a “true atheist”. An atheist is someone who does not believe in gods, not someone who is spiritual. That is something entirely different.
