Question by iJoJo: Suggestions for tarot deck/book?
Hi, im interested in learning how to read tarot cards. Any suggestions for a good starter pack incl. book and deck? Ive read that you’re supposed to look around and feel for decks however all the shops ive visited have them packaged and you are not allowed to open them, just look at the packaging basically. Thank you!

They are packaged for protection from theft. If your intuned with your energies well (which you need to be for good tarot reading) you will be able to run your hand over the package and “know” which one is right for you. You may already have a specific trend you lean towards (celtic, egyptian, etc etc) and that can be a huge clue on what path you should go.

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/ will show you any number of decks.

The Classic deck is the Rider Waite deck. Many books are written with this deck in mind.

It really is a matter of personal preference so have a scout through that website and see what you think.

Books can onlly take you so far, you have to work with the cards yourself and come up with your own interpretations, but the books are somewhere to start. Yesterday I posted a link to an online tarot course, I shall be back in a moment when I have found it again

A lot of tarot classes are based on the Rider-Waite or Universal Waite decks (the latter is the same as the first deck only with softer colors).

I would recommend starting with one of those decks, and the book “Easy Tarot Guide” by Marcia Masino.

You could also utilize this online course http://www.learntarot.com/

Once you have gotten this down pretty well, it should be much easier to move on to learning another deck that you are drawn to. I still utilize my Universal Waite deck, but I found I was more drawn to the Celtic themed Sacred Circle deck and I use that one more now.

I have this one deck that comes with a really detailed and easy to understand book. It’s really great. It’s the Gendron Tarrot by Melanie Gendron.

Look it up, the pictures are really nice too.

Get them at Spencer’s. There’s a pretty good deck that comes with a book and it’s about $12. It should be right by the Ouija boards in the store. This deck also has really good artwork on the cards, especially in the Major Arcana.

Ooh goody, a question I can answer really well!

Most of the modern tarot decks you will find in the shops, be they Vampires or Clowns are based on the “Rider-Waite” deck, also published as the “Universal Waite” which is the same but shaded a little better. It was drawn by Pamela Colman Smith in 1909 (her story comes with the little booklet in the box). The symbolism is much older, and you’ll also find different renderings of the cards (my “death” card is on a horse, not reaping in a field as is common).

I cannot reccomend any “starter packs” because most tarot readers will tell you first to find your own meanings, then to seek out a book that works for you. I use Amber Jayanti’s “Living the Tarot”, which covers the major cards in detail, one by one and without any wishy washy fluffy stuff!

US games systems inc are one of the bigger tarot publishers, and also make the Tarot games as well. If you like the Lord of the Rings, the artist Peter Pracownick has designed a wonderful deck/game that really works as a divination tool. Each character is perfectly selected to match each card, and makes it a joy to read for someone! So very pretty t

    Merry Meet,

The best beginner decks in my opinion are Rider-Waite or Universal Waite. You can buy them on amazon.com or azuregreen.com. There is even a free online course at http://www.learntarot.com/ for these decks.

I hope this blurp helps out some.

    Blessed Be
