Question by Arlene Schmecky: Do all Christians steal things when you have them over for dinner? (Real Question!) Please help!?
Okay, so I invited that new pastor (his name is Dr. Poe and he has a degree in comparative religion from Georgetown Univ. so he’s not just some nutter) of the Lutheran Church down by Fourth Ave. over for dinner hoping to have a stimulating philosophical discussion about the metaphysical nature of transcendental meditation in contemporary religious thought. I am an atheist but I am always interested in the ideas and beliefs of others and always treat them with respect not that they always respond in kind. Some are quite rude and abusive always telling about how I’m going to some hell or other but that’s the way it goes. Long story short, the Reverend pulls one of those I have a sudden headache things and leaves shortly after dessert and while I’m washing up I discover that I’m now short one salad fork, two teaspoons and one decorative soap from the half bath off the living room. This happened after I had the Catholic priest from St. Mary’s last year (two teaspoons (!!) and a linen napkin) and things haven’t been the same between us since. I was hoping to make a fresh start with a new sect, i.e. the Lutherans, but now I am not so certain. How should I handle this? I am despondent and reluctant to trust any more religious types.

I dare say there are thieves in every religion, but a tad strange to lump everyone together.

That’s pretty sad. I guess praying for silverware never helps those sorry bastards. Why don’t they just go to Bed Bath and Beyond like everyone else?

  • Dana the Great: Very Rainy says:

Funny, you know, after Phil the Atheist came over for dinner, I was missing three bottles of wine, a steak knife, and the bar of soap that was in the bathroom.

I suppose you and me just have bad luck with thieves when our intentions are simply to embrace others!

  • Michael says:

No all Christians do not steal kitchen utensils. There is a simple commandment for all christians “Though shall not steal”. If you believe he did it he is breaking a commandment and that is not good for him. I personally am a christian and I have never stolen anything in my life.

Well, I’m glad you learned your lesson about allowing religious types into your house. One time my mom visited (she is Baptist) and when she left, I noticed I was missing a sofa, a trundle bed, a 52″ flat screen TV AND my pepper grinder.

The best thing to do would be to write it off and never, ever, ever, ever make this mistake again. I would also recommend attending this pastor’s church and compensating yourself from the collection plate as it’s passed around.

  • Love2sew4ever says:

I’m sorry that this ruined the way you view Christians and that things were stolen from you . We aren’t thieves, and these men might just be dishonest. Please don’t think all Christians are like that! If you want, give it another chance, and hopefully you will find a honest preacher you can trust.

Hey, the guy doesn’t get paid. I bet there’s just no silverware in the houses the church gives them. Give him a break.

  • wonderer says:

How naive that is like saying all Atheist are stealers because one or two of them are, I think you are looking for an excuse to bash all Christians but honestly I think that some NOT ALL for some reason do not see it as stealing why I don’t know because if they took anything then it is stealing but some of them have this wild idea to have an item that is of no value which is why they think it isn’t stealing if it doen’t have any worth to them as for a way to gain money but just to have an item they will use that item to pray for that person they will hold or touch that item while praying but I don’t believe in this at all not stealing an item that is totally wrong however I did make a picture frame of my parents and all of their childern and my mother God rest her soul she would feel the need to pray for one of us children or if one of us ask her to pray for us or if she knew we needed pray and had problems she would go to that frame and hold her hand over that child to pray for them many times and I wouldn’t have that any other way I know you don’t believe in God but I have too not because my mother showed and taught me about him alone but also because I have seen and felt his power and how he moves in ways when there is no other way for it to be but I am not trying to push or do anything to change how you think or feel in that area just to try to explain how some have I want to say odd but I am not sure that is fair so I will say different ways to pray for people and again I am sorry for what they have done but you can’t blame every Christian for their behavior I hope you get to experience a more positive experience from other Christians who would never dream of stealing anything or doing anything to cause you to bash them all I won’t push I think that is why Christians are getting bashed more today because of them trying to force people into how they believe when if they don’t agree the best way is to walk away and not to go door to door or campaign for God when people are busy but they should spend that time for praying for those they are so dead set on changing it’s sad really I think Christians should live according to God’s will and preach the word of God for what it is but I also think they should do it where they belong and not on someone else’s toes and pray for them to come to God on their own and if they don’t then leave them alone about it all I know this will get thumbs down from Atheist along with some Christians but they are pushing people farther from God and religion because of trying to choke them with God’s word instead of praying for those persons

  • Lady Lynx says:

Go find him and demand he give the items back. Also remind him that stealing is frowned upon by god. You know, just to pack on the guilt a little.
And next time you invite someone like them for dinner, invite them to a restaurant or something instead of your house. Or ask if the dinner can be at their house.

I agree completely with Techtonic French Toast. Now you’ve learned your lesson. Next time you want to discuss meditation and religion, have the pastor meet you at Applebee’s.
