Page: Book 2 of the Protector of the Small Quartet

As the only female page in history to last beyond the first year of formal training to become a knight, 11-year-old Keladry of Mindelan has an uphill battle to fight. In addition to proving herself worthy of being a page, Kel spends her time defending first-year pages from bullies, staying on top of homework, conquering her paralyzing fear of heights, and keeping up with Lord Wyldon’s grueling physical training schedule. Kel’s detractors do everything in their power to thwart her progress, from tormenting her friends to sabotaging the Midwinter Festivities to kidnapping her maid and dog on the day of final examinations. The tide of resistance begins to turn slightly during the summer between Kel’s second and third years, when she l

I love this book. This is the second book of the Protector of the Small Series. In this book, Kel hires a shy maid Lalasa, who becomes a very good friend. She trains her to defend herself against attackers. Her also meets a new animal friend, her dog Jump, who is useful in combat. She goes through severel ‘firsts’like having her first period and her first crush. Lalasa helps her to deal with it all. She still has to deal with the bully Joren and his cronies being as difficult as ever. At the end of the book, the day of the test to become a squire, Lalasa is kidnapped, and it is up to Kel to rescue her before it is too late.

This was my favorite out of all the Tamora Pierce series and one of my favorites out of the series. I liked the first book too. And the third. I haven’t read the fourth yet though. Kel is a great character who is so kind and adventurous.

In this new and exciting adventure, Kel starts off by being an eleven year old, second-grade page. After proving to everyone that she is here to stay, she does not think that Joren and his gang of bullies will bother her or other first-year pages again; however, the beginning of the term sees Keladry getting into yet another fight. Following this fight, she makes a new friend, Owen. However, he is not the only new addition to Kel’s group of friends. Kel soon comes to love Jump, a palace dog, who is old and has lost an ear and bears many scars. Kel also hires Lalasa, Gower’s neice, as a maid, thinking that by doing so, Lalasa wil stop being mistreated by men. Kel teaches Lalasa how to defend herself, at first against her maid’s wish, but Lalasa soon evolves into a strong, independant young woman who is not afraid to let men know the meaning of the word “no”. Lalasa is not the only person that evolves. Now that Kel has reached puberty, she must learn to deal with her new feelings for Neal, her best friend, and she learns the joy – and hardships – of entering womanhood and getting her menstruation. She must also learn to conquer her fear of heights, which she thinks is necessary in order for her to become a knight. While things aren’t always easy at the palace, Kel manages to pull through it all and, at the end of the book, she finally becomes a squire. This book was highly enjoyable and just as good as the previous one. I cannot wait to read the continuation, rightly entitled Squire! I am not at all disappointed and I thoroughly believe that Tamora Pierce has managed to write yet another fantasy story, filled with adventure and action. Congratulations Tamora!

The second installment of the POTS series subtley delves into Keladry’s character, causing the audience to relate with her problems and understand what motivates her. Kel has more on her hands in her later years as a page, including a timid, man-fearing maid called Lalasa, a dog named Jump who is determined to follow her wherever she goes and of course, her hormones.Even after surviving probation, Kel isn’t accepted by Joren and his gang, but is now armed with several good friends (a new first-year named Owen is introduced) to back her up. Wyldon (known as the Stump by Kel’s friend Neal) doesn’t go easy on Kel either. He is determined to fix her fear of heights, but so is Kel.In this book we find how deep Kel’s strength and courage can go. Pierce does a wonderful job of fleshing out Kel’s character. As I read this book and the other books of this series, I could really see myself in Kel, despite the fact that we have different personalities entirely. Kel is a remarkable heroine who is neither too perfect or too flawed. Her mix of determination, strength, caring and calmness are just right. She is entirely different from both Alanna and Daine, but you cheer for her just as strongly. The book overall is exciting, with a wonderfully thought out battle, and will keep you coming back for more. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve read it. The cast of characters in this book, I think are more interesting than in the other two Tortall series, though some of the more interesting characters from them appear in this book and later in the series, Squire especially. This is a good buy and is written by one of the best authors in the fantasy genre.

You’ve meet Keladry (Kel), the protector of the small in First Test, but have you met Page Kel?
This book is about Kel, now a page, and her adventures. She is smart, funny, and you can’t put Page down!
Kel fights bandits, she makes more friends, and someone keeps sending her mysterious expensive presents. And where is “Sir” Lady Allana of Trebond, Olau, Pirates Swoop, and the Bloody Hawk? (read The Song of the Lioness) Maybe she’s the mysterious well-wisher?
For fun and adventure, pick up Page!
