Question by Atrum Animus AM: Christians – that fish symbol on your Hummer – did you know it’s real origins?
The symbol you have on your was originally displayed sitting on it’s tail. Why? Because it is meant to resemble the vulva of the vagina. You are all driving around with vagina’s on your car!

RE: This fish predates Christianity and stands for pagan fertility awareness and sexuality. Ichthys was the son of the ancient sea goddess Atargatis. Other mythic names given to this entity are Aphrodite, Tirgata, Delphine, or Pelagia. The Goddess Aphrodite Salacia, was worshiped on Friday, her sacred day. They ate fish and took part in orgies. The part of this ritual that was taken by the Christian church is the eating of fish on Friday. The word also means dolphin or womb. It has also been depicted as a mermaid.

The fish was also established in the Middle East with the goddess of Ephesus who covered her genital region with a fish amulet. There is also a tale of the fish that swallowed the penis of Osiris.

The Greek word for fish is “ixthus” or “icthus.” The Christian fish symbol that many Christians place on their car is known as the “ixthus.” Five Greek letters form the word “ixthus,” and those letters inside the fish form an acrostic which is a message that Christians clearly identified with. The first letter represented the word Jesus. The second letter represented the word Christ, the next two, God Son, and the final letter represented the word Savior. This adds up to “Jesus Christ is God’s Son, the Savior.” During early Christianity, Christians were often put to death for practicing their faith, so they worshiped in secret places. A fish painted on the outside door of a house let other Christians know that they would be safe and welcome inside. The Christian fish symbol is now often used to identify Christians and/or Christian businesses.

Hey! If you point out that half of their religion is taken from pagan mythology and ritual they might have to go read some history books that weren’t written by christian apologists…for example anything written by Bob Price…..and we can’t be having that!

Although you are technically correct, by the time Christianity adopted the fish symbol, it no longer represented female sexuality, but instead represented the Age of Pisces, which was the driving force behind the invention of Christianity.

Oh put a sock in it.

Jesus said, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” That is why some of us display a fish on our car.

Oh, and I don’t drive a Hummer, I drive a gas-efficient auto (Scion Xb), FYI. Please stop generalizing, it only makes you look silly.

I take it to symbolize the fish Jesus provided. I’m sure you could knock that too. The statements you made may be true, but it doesn’t mean that is what is “on” our vehicles. What about the teletubbies. I suppose you think one wears a “gay” sign. It is all how you perceive, or how you CHOOSE to perceive life.

  • arily666 says:

or you could just as easily and likely trace it back to the symbol from the source of the Hebrew religion and hence the Christian one as well ,the Egyptian astrological symbol for the piscian age which makes more sense to me .

  • moma3 says:

hmmm.I was told that it was a symbol used during times when Christians were being persecuted and they would draw half of the symbol in the sand wait for a christian to come and finish the other half and that is how they found one another.But.That is mighty funny.I really don’t believe in showing symbols of faith off.

  • Utuk says:

That theory has since been discredited.
But the fish was a symbol for the equinox in the constellation of Pisces, as well as the Omphalos at Delphi and the god Apollo.

  • alomi_revolution says:

Nah, it came from the linkage of two christian biblical influences:

    1) Jonah and him being eaten by a whale
    2) Jesus claiming that the sign of Jonah, the fish, would be the only sign shown to a perverse generation (talking to the Pharisees at that point).
