The Beltane Fire Festival is held every year during the night of 30th April on Calton Hill in Edinburgh and is a reenactment of an ancient pagan tradition. The name “Beltane” is thought to have derived from a Gaelic-Celtic word meaning bright/sacred fire. It was held to mark and celebrate the blossoming of spring. The ritual welcoming of the sun and the lighting of the fires was also believed to ensure fertility of the land and the people. This footage was (probably) filmed in 1992.
