What Benefits Could A Tarot Reading Provide?
This article aims to show the psychological concepts which may be relevant to Tarot card reading and uses similarities with acupuncture to explore this. The benefit to those whose social network does not provide all the resources necessary to them is shown.
The emergence of Tarot in Europe coincided roughly with the introduction also of paper production ability in the 12th Century. Paper was invented in China a Han, Cai Lun in the 2nd Century. Tarot symbols could be put onto paper and it is possible that the Tarot had some connection with China.
Symbols were used by people in order to explain concepts as most people did not read or write as this was restricted to richer people and priests. This usage of symbols to explain concepts is found in Piagets preoperational period of cognitive development ( p 45, Bernstein, Ron, Srull and Wickens , 1991) where a child around the age of 3-5 years of age develop the ability to use symbolism to explain concepts. Freud explained personality development as having three distinct parts-the Id which was connected with the baby like wants and needs with no other concern for others around it, the ego which emerged early at 3- 5 years of age and showed an understanding of having to be realistic with the demands of the Id. The superego is aware of influences around it at about 5 years of age and develop a conscience and understand the consequences of actions.
Freud used the concept of an iceberg which represented the mind floating in a sea of nonconsciousness ( things not yet experienced). The conscious mind made up the small, top part of the iceberg that is visible above the waterline. The subconscious mind is a small part just under the surface (things that can be
