A Retro Sweet Halloween History
Once again, it’s children’s favorite time of the year, Halloween! Loads of candies by the buckets will be all over the neighborhood on this night and these kids will be the excited recipients. Trick or treating has been a famous tradition on this night when kids go around houses and get lots of their favorite tongue treats. This year, those retro sweets that defined the landscape of candies for the next thirty years will be resurrected like they never before.
Definitely, Halloween is not just for kids as adults who were also once hungry treat or treaters get to reunite with their favorite old-fashioned sweets from way back when. But that’s not to say Halloween’s candied history stops right there. Actually, it’s been centuries since people came up with this whole concept. Those were the days of pagan rituals that were later incorporated with the Church. The name itself is quite mysterious in that nobody exactly knows when and where it began. There are many stories though. Some say it came from an old Celtic festival in celebration of a good harvest. The scary dimension to this night has something to do with these people’s belief that this was a time when the dead would rise up to spread diseases to the living and even to crops. If there’s any history to those scary-looking pumpkins and other Halloween staple scares, this might have a lot to do with it.
On the other hand, the fun part or trick-or treating is said to have begun sometime in the Middle Ages when poor people visited houses and were given food in exchange for prayers for the donors’ deceased family and friends.
