Witchcraft As It Is Practiced Today Is Different From Traditional Witchcraft
A long time ago, during the middle ages, practicing the art of witchcraft was largely looked down upon, misunderstod, and later feared and persecuted. Witches were commonly tortured burnt alive. This was due to widespread fear among people of witches and witchcraft. It was little-understood and mystery surrounded it – people as far as the American colonies, but also everywhere in Europe, people were deeply afraid of anything relating to this (to them) dark art.
The aim of this article is intended to make the reader undestand what’s really going on behind the scenes with witchraft. There are so many false ideas going around in different circles that it makes it hard to tell how things really were sometimes.
The modern term epidemic applies, as it was so largespread but quite irrational. Even if anyone had the smallest idea that another person could be a witch, that was enough evidence for the persecuters to take the witch away and torture and eventually kill them.
In modern society, however, we have moved on from such insanity and superstition and nowadays, witchcraft is becoming a more and more accepted way of living. Many more people are now embracing the traditions of witchcraft openly, without having to fear persecution. Media attention and movies have played a large role in popularizing the Wiccan religion in particular – one form of witchcraft. But Wicca is just that – only one form of this practice. There are other subgroups within witchcraft as well which many people follow, and several of these have a long tradition.
As an ending remark, it is curious that the modern witchcraft movement can largely be traced back to three specific people. These are – Gerald Gardner, the “father” of modern witchcraft, Margaret Murray, a scholar and researcher, and Alexander Sanders, a “grassroots” leader.
