Stress will literally kill you, if you don’t learn to control it.  Many times we don’t even realize how stressed out we are, while our bodies and our feelings are showing all the signs of this killer.  Consider the following symptoms of stress:

Why Stress Control is So Important

Some of the major causes of death in America are precipitated partly, if not mostly, by stress.  Heart disease, for example, is aggravated by high blood pressure, which can be caused by stress in our daily lives.  This can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

A suppressed immune system keeps the body from fighting off serious ailments.  This can be incredibly dangerous the older we get.  Cancer, pneumonia and other diseases can be fatal if our body’s immune system is compromised.

Stress can also result in infertility.  This affects both women and men.  If you suffer from chronic stress your body can stop producing the hormones necessary for reproduction.  Our ovaries and testes can even be negatively affected.

Depression may become so inhibiting that a person is unable to rid themselves of anxiety.  This can lead to loss of appetite and even suicide.

These, and many more diseases, are aggravated by the stress in our daily lives.  It’s imperative that we do something on a regular basis to relax and de-stress.  Learning relaxation techniques are essential to keep our stress under control.

Relaxation Techniques

Generally speaking, relaxation techniques work by focusing your attention on something calming, while increasing awareness of your body.  Think of yoga:  you are instructed to meditate, or think of something pleasant, while moving your body into various poses.  This not only strengthens and tones your body, it also totally relaxes you.
